90’s baybehs rejoice! Criminally underrated R’n’B veteran Mya’s 7th studio effort ‘Smoove Jones‘ has been lauded both by fans as well as by critics – after all, few can handle Contemporary R’n’B as effortlessly as Miss Mya. The album made it to our best of 2016 year end list, and earned a well deserved nomination at this week’s Beyonce/Rihanna-snubbing Grammy Awards ceremony. A year since the release of her most cohesive effort in ages – the Soul chanteuse unleashes a stunning black-and-white video for the sensual baby-making mid-tempo extravaganza ‘Coolin‘, easily a standout track on the album.
The Matt Sharp-directed cut is an intimate affair which fits well with the general vibe of the album – a love affair between Mya and her loyal legion of fans. Mya looks stunning as usual, while she romances her guy on the beaches of Sydney – fans may just be reminded of her 2003 cut ‘Fallen‘ from the Gold-certified ‘Moodring‘ album.
It’s a shame that American Radio’s all but forgotten veterans like Mya, Brandy, Monica – who helped shape the musical landscape of the 90’s. Instead of ignoring their existence while they consistently release some of their best works – radio should rejoice that veterans like Mya are still gifting us new music.
