Sia’s ‘Cheap Thrills’ Featuring Sean Paul Tops The Billboard Hot 100!

Possibly the best news I’ve heard about the insanely stagnant and somewhat pathetic Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart this year so far – I mean Drake’s ‘One Dance‘? Desiigner’s ‘Panda‘? Excuse my rant – but I honestly can’t, with this overdose of mediocrity slathered all over the charts, thanks to this streaming business.

Aussie songstress supreme Sia Furler has managed to achieve the almost-impossible. The last time a female vocalist aged above 40 crowned the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart was precisely 16 years ago – when a 42-year-old Madonna took ‘Music‘ all the way to # 1 in 2000. A year before that – a 52-year-old Cher made history when ‘Believe‘ reached the penthouse. Sia – aged 40 years and 7 months – completes a 23-week climb all the way to # 1 with ‘Cheap Thrills‘ featuring Sean Paul, which jumps from #3 to #1 this week, dethroning Drake after a 10 week run at the penthouse with ‘One Dance‘ featuring WizKid and Kyla. Additionally, ‘Cheap Thrills‘ is Sia’s first # 1 hit as a lead singer, she had previously reached the top spot as the co-writer for Rihanna’s ‘Diamonds‘. Ironically, ‘Cheap Thrills‘ was originally intended for Rihanna to be included on ‘Anti‘, she eventually passed it!

Sean Paul thus notches his fourth Hot 100 # 1 hit after a gap of 10 years – he last ruled the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Temperature‘ in 2006.

Both Katy Perry and Britney Spears unveiled new singles last week – both of which have missed out on the top 10 this week, but have made a dent within the top 20. While Katy’s ‘Rise‘ arrives at # 11 this week, Britney’s ‘Make Me‘ featuring G-Eazy arrives at #17. I’m not exactly feeling both these songs – let’s see what else the ladies have to offer from their respective eras.
