Adele Tops Billboard Hot 100, ‘Hello’ Sells Over 1.11 Million Downloads This Week!

As expected, the chart hurricane that is Adele arrives at # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week with ‘Hello‘ – the first single off her feverishly anticipated 3rd studio effort ‘25‘ dropping November 20th.

Astounding fact? ‘Hello‘ sold an unprecedented 1.11 million downloads this week, thus becoming the first song in history to sell over a million downloads within a week. ‘Hello‘ (initially predicted to sell 900,000 units this week) thus surpasses Flo Rida’s ‘Right Round‘ which held the record for the most first-week downloads with 636,000 units. The gorgeous piano ballad becomes the diva’s 4th Hot 100 # 1 hit, and also becomes the 24th song to début atop the Billboard Hot 100. A welcome break, I say. I cannot possibly deal with any more mediocrity sitting atop the US Charts – it’s been way, way too long!

Beliebers must be fuming at Adele though, as the chanteuse blocks Justin Bieber from earning his second consecutive Hot 100 # 1 ( as well as a second # 1 début) as ‘Sorry‘ arrives at # 2 this week. ‘Sorry‘ follows the # 1 début of ‘What Do You Mean‘ – both songs preview Bieber’s upcoming album ‘Purpose‘ dropping November 13th. ‘Mean..’ slips down to # 5 this week, thus making Bieber the 20th male vocalist to have two songs within the top 5 of the Hot 100.

Last week’s # 1, ‘The Hills‘ by The Weeknd, drops down to # 4 this week.

Over at the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, Aussie quartet 5 Seconds Of Summer arrives at # 1 with ‘Sounds Good Feels Good‘ (192,000 units sold), while Country superstar Carrie Underwood misses out the # 1 spot for the first time in a decade and arrives at # 2 with ‘Storyteller‘ (177,000 units). Each of Underwood’s studio albums have arrived at # 1 except for her début album ‘Some Hearts‘ which peaked at # 2 in 2005 (and eventually went on to become the highest selling album of 2005 and of her career).
