Ariana Grande’s ‘My Everything’ Debuts Atop Billboard 200, Taylor Swift Dominates Hot 100!

Diva overload y’all!

With a stellar 8 out of the top 10 songs in the US by female vocalists (the remaining two include a gay man and a group) – including the # 1 album in the country – the rising divas of this generation continue giving the men a run for their coins! #OvaryOverload

The top 10’s SATURATED with Taylor Swift, Meghan Trainor, Nicki Minaj, Jessie J, Ariana Grande, Iggy Azalea, Rita Ora, Sia and Charli XCX fighting it out for the coveted penthouse, while Sam Smith aka Gaydele holds on as the only solo male vocalist within the top 10, with the band Magic tumbling down the charts on their way out.

Country sweetheart-gone-Pop Princess Taylor Swift is taking no prisoners (as per usual) as she holds on for a second week as the Queen of the Hot 100 with her anti-haters anthem ‘Shake It Off‘ (I’m thoroughly feeling this song – it’s so damn liberating!). The song, which previews her upcoming album ‘1989‘, made an utterly massive début at # 1 on the Hot 100 last week with a stellar 544,000 units sold (the fourth highest sales début of all time), combined with huge airplay and streaming gains due to the accompanying video. This week the song sells another impressive 355,000 units and sticks on to # 1 buoyed by her super-charged performance of the song at the 2014 MTV VMA’s this week.

Poor Meghan Trainor – I mean seriously, she must be cursing Taylor Swift right now. Meghan’s début single ‘All About That Bass‘ was poised to dethrone Magic’s ‘Rude‘ about two weeks ago with massive digital sales and airplay gains, and Taylor Swift had to drop her new single on that very same week – and we all knew few can survive THAT onslaught! Thankfully, Trainor’s ‘Bass‘ rises up to her previous peak of # 2 this week, and may well triumph over Swift next week if sales of ‘Shake It Off‘ fall further and ‘Bass‘ rises in airplay and maintains its present sales momentum.

Potty mouth extraordinaire Nicki Minaj’s jaw-dropping ‘Anaconda‘ slips down a notch from # 2 to # 3 this week, although the song makes massive gains in sales, airplay and streaming after Minaj’s performance of the song at the VMA’s.  The song – her most provocative work till date – also holds tight at # 1 on both the R’n’B/Hip Hop and Rap Songs Chart after dethroning Iggy Azalea’s ‘Fancy‘ from both the charts – while becoming Minaj’s highest charting solo single of her career on the Hot 100!

Minaj doubles up at # 4 on the Hot 100 as well (clearly, she’s coming for her crown after Azalea hit # 1 with ‘Fancy‘) with a little help from fellow divas Jessie J and Ariana Grande as ‘Bang Bang‘ roars up to # 4 from # 9 this week, again following the song’s performance by the trio at the VMA’s. The video of the song debuted following their performance – and sales of the song surged a massive 54% to 244,000 downloads this week. Girl power y’all!

Soulful newbie Sam Smith aka Gaydele holds on as the only solo male vocalist within the top 10 with his power-ballad ‘Stay With Me‘ at # 5, while Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora hold on at # 6 with ‘Black Widow‘. Expect the song to rise next week with the post VMA push for most of the other singles waning to an extent.

While Ariana Grande holds on to # 7 on the Hot 100 with ‘Break Free‘ featuring Zedd – her sophomore album ‘My Everything‘ makes a splash at # 1 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart with 169,000 units sold this week, thus becoming her second consecutive # 1 album after her début ‘Yours Truly‘ hit # 1 less than a year ago. Grande thus joins Susan Boyle and LeAnn Rimes as the only other female vocalists of the SoundScan era to notch two # 1 albums in the span of less than a year!
