Nicki Minaj Unveils Stripped Down, Vulnerable Lead Single ‘Pills N Potions’ From ‘The Pink Print’

While a female Rap newbie inches closer to creating history on the Billboard Charts this week, (Iggy Azalea’s ‘Fancy‘ is at # 2 on the Hot 100 – a step away from dethroning John Legend), the original Hip Hop Queen of this generation is gearing up to reclaim her throne. Clearly, times are changing for the Femcee. Yet again.

Potty-mouthed Harajuku Barbie Nicki Minaj has been unusually quiet as of late – which is a complete anti-thesis to the sassy fierceness the Rapstress is known to display. Well, turns out it was all a part of the package that is her upcoming feverishly anticipated 3rd studio album ‘The Pink Print‘, dropping later this year, possibly as a stealth release.

Ever the Pop chameleon, Minaj took her legions of Barbz by surprise as ‘Pills N Potions‘, the lead single from the album, turned out to be her most vulnerable, emotional and honest single yet. Minaj digs deep inside on the subdued Dr Luke-produced ‘Potions‘, and reveals her tender side that we saw a glimpse of on ‘Your Love‘ – her breakthrough smash.

There are no spitfire animated verses, no delirious ‘Starships‘-like rhymes, no Roman Zolanski or Martha – and yet Minaj hits the bulls-eye as she solemnly reflects over a rather infectious hook and an addictive ‘I Still Love, I Still Love‘ chant that is bound to get stuck in your head.

People will love you and support you when it’s beneficial/I’mma forgive, I won’t forget, but I’mma dead the issue/Soon as you out a ni–a’s life is when they start to miss you/They see you doin’ good now, it’s kinda hard to diss you,‘ she croons mournfully over a sweeping piano and violins.

I’m definitely feeling the direction Minaj is headed. As much as I enjoyed her ground-breaking, genre-bending début ‘Pink Friday‘, the follow-up ‘Pink Friday : Roman Reloaded‘ lacked soul – it was way much of a crowd-pleaser (‘Va Va Voom‘, ‘Turn Me On‘, ‘Pound The Alarm‘). Back in the day, Lil Kim (clearly Nicki’s inspiration – irrespective of their beef) would keep it real when she followed her iconic début ‘Hard Core‘ with the introspective ‘The Notorious Kim‘ and ‘La Bella Mafia‘ – cementing her status as a pioneer of the game who upped her street credibility and chart achievements with each album . Good to see Nicki keeping it real, raw and honest with the new album, which she claims is a true story.

With both her albums hitting # 1 on the Billboard Charts, looks like Nicki’s about to add a record-breaking third chart-topper to her already impressive discography. She’s not aiming to shock with her stellar verses or her jaw dropping costumes. This time around, she’s keeping it graceful and classy, while going back to the basics. Don’t cut her street cred out at all though – with the hype created around buzz singles ‘Yasss Bish‘ and ‘Chi-Raq‘, Minaj is nowhere close to slowing down anytime soon!
