It’s hard to believe that it’s been a decade since R’n’B songstress Keyshia Cole first stormed the charts with the feisty ‘Never‘ (feat. Eve) and ‘I Changed My Mind‘ – the first of 16 hits to have graced the Hot 100, and 25 hits on the R’n’B/Hip Hop Songs Chart.
With five consecutive top 10 albums (her entire output) under her belt, the husky-voiced Soul diva is all set to get personal with her 6th release titled ‘Point Of No Return‘, tentatively scheduled for a summer release.
Ms K. Cole has unveiled the slick new clip for the first single off the project, titled ‘Rick James‘, and Keyshia and her posse get nasty on glow-in-the-dark bikes as they confront Keyshia’s philandering ex (possibly an ode to Cole’s ex, NBA agent Daniel Gibson who was reportedly cheating on her) who plays away with another woman.
The steamy John Colombo-directed clip also features rapper Juicy J, fresh from the success of Katy Perry’s ‘Dark Horse‘ hitting the # 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
I’ve always felt Cole to be the one to carry forward the iconic Mary J Blige’s legacy. She’s consistently delivered, and irrespective of her last 2 projects ‘Woman To Woman‘ and ‘Calling All Hearts‘ failing to match the Platinum status of her first three albums – Cole clearly kept her priorities right when it came to the music, instead of selling out. With ‘Rick James‘, Cole’s defiant vocals sound stronger than ever – a signature blend of raspy and raw anguish as well as emotional vulnerability – akin to Mary’s ‘Share My World‘ or ‘Mary‘ projects.
Lets hope ‘Point Of No Return‘ does for Keyshia what ‘No More Drama‘ did for Mary J Blige back in 2001.
