Make way for Zella Day y’all!
The Arizona native has been in the news lately for her stellar set of pipes and her airy and sparse cover of The White Stripe’s ‘Seven Nation Army‘.
And now, Zella is all set to tip-toe her way up the mainstream charts as she finally unveils her much-anticipated début solo effort in the form of ‘Sweet Ophelia‘ – easily one of the best songs I’ve heard this year!
With vocals that essentially sound like a charming cross between Lana Del Rey and Fleetwood Mac songbird/legend Stevie Nicks, Zella blooms with the rousing ballad as her earthy chants about an all-consuming love rise to an incredible crescendo over the superbly melodic chorus. The lush, organic feel of the song ushers in summer – it’s romance at its purest form.
‘Sweet Ophelia‘ is a polished début effort that should easily propel Zella Day ahead of the new crop of indie vocalists who have carved a niche for themselves. Like Lorde, who slayed every mainstream radio and chart record possible, Day slips into the mould of an unlikely indie artist with major crossover potential, as her evolved sound easily transcends across any particular genre.
Imagine what her vocals might sound like if Sia was on board for her major label début! Just saying.
Zella Day’s about to happen in a big way.
