Mary J Blige should just call her new album ‘The Art Of Staying Relevant‘.
Seriously y’all, there’s no one quite like the undisputed Queen of Hip Hop/Soul when it comes to venturing into new territory – with unprecedented levels of success – winning over fans from every genre and generation possible.
Mary has never shied away from experimenting with her sound, irrespective of staying rooted to Hip Hop/Soul. Back in 1999, on her fourth studio album ‘Mary‘ (one of her most critically lauded efforts) Mary collaborated with the likes of George Michael, Elton John and Eric Clapton – something that the Hip Hop world would guffaw at. Eventually, the album went double platinum.
Throughout her stellar career, the living legend has collaborated with everybody ranging from Aretha Franklin, Lauryn Hill, Sting, Lil’ Kim, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Santana, Andrea Bocelli, Kendrick Lamar, Rod Stewart, Beyoncé, Missy Elliott, Sinead O’Connor etc. Now that’s an admirable bouquet of some of the major players in the game.
The latest on the roster? UK-based dance outfit Disclosure, whose album ‘Settle‘ is up for a Grammy this year. (Well, so is Mary. Two of them actually).
Mary sounds unsurprisingly amazing as a powerhouse disco diva, as she lends her soaring vocals to Disclosure’s ‘F For You‘. Rest assured, she has another smash up her sleeves, especially in Europe. I love the 90’s club feel to the song – reminds me of the classic sound of Deborah Cox, CeCe Peniston and Ultra Nate.
Of course, having an R’n’B great like Mary J Blige as a collaborator ensures that your record is played on US Radio. A fitting breakthrough for Disclosure.
This could well be the direction in which Mary’s new sound is headed. As always, I can’t wait!
