Lorde’s ‘Royals’ Tops Billboard Hot 100, Cher Earns Highest Charting Album Of Her Career!

Cuz she’ll never be a royal? HA!!

Contrary to what she defiantly declares in her runaway smash ‘Royals‘,  16-year-old New Zealander Lorde finds herself in some very, um, royal company this week!

As I had predicted earlier, Lorde’s début single ‘Royals‘ roars up 2 spots to dethrone Miley Cyrus from # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart this week, thus making her the youngest solo vocalist since 1987 to hit # 1. Back then, 16-year-old Tiffany took ‘I Think We’re Alone Now‘ all the way to the top of the charts in November, 1987.

Royals‘ sold an impressive 294,000 units this week to crown the Digital Songs Chart as well, while airplay for the song continues to rise. The song bounds ahead of Katy Perry’s ‘Roar‘, which stays stuck at # 2 again this week, while Miley’s ‘Wrecking Ball‘ slips down from the pole position to # 3 this week.

Some major action over at the Billboard 200 Albums Chart as well, as Canadian rapper Drake charges in at # 1 with his third studio album ‘Nothing Was The Same‘ with an astonishing 658,000 units sold this week – thus marking the second largest first-week sales of 2013 after Justin Timberlake’s ‘The 20/20 Experience‘ earlier this year which opened with 968,000 units. Drake easily triumphs Kings Of Leon who arrive at # 2 with ‘Mechanical Bull‘, which moved an impressive 110,000 units this week to arrive at # 2.

A pair of legends soar in the next two spots, with diva extraordinaire Cher earning her highest chart position ever as a solo artist on the Billboard 200 with her brand new album ‘Closer To The Truth‘ arriving at # 3 with 63,000 units sold this week! Throughout her illustrious career, Cher managed to peak at #4 with both ‘Believe‘ (1999) and ‘The Very Best Of Cher‘ (2003). Cher’s stunning chart feat (she’s been charting for over 5 decades now) is followed by the arrival of another icon, Elton John, who arrives at # 4 with his brand new album ‘The Diving Board‘, which sold over 47,000 units to become his 18th top 10 album!
