She literally arrives like a wrecking ball y’all!
After all the twerking, the controversy, the infamous VMA performance, the split with her fiancé, and most importantly, THAT TONGUE – Miley Cyrus shoots all the way up to the summit of the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with the second single ‘Wrecking Ball‘ from her feverishly anticipated new album ‘Bangerz‘. The song thus becomes Miley’s first Billboard # 1 single – she had peaked as high as # 2 with both ‘Party In The USA‘ and the first single off ‘Bangerz‘, ‘We Can’t Stop‘.
Following the release of the controversial music video for ‘Wrecking Ball‘, which broke the Vevo record for the most number of views within 24 hours, the single sold a massive 477,000 this week to top the Digital Songs Chart – and of course the Hot 100, dethroning Katy Perry’s ‘Roar‘ after a 2 week reign. ‘Roar‘ slips down a notch to # 2 this week, although it soars in airplay and moves another 331,000 units.
The all-female domination of the top 3 is completed by the biggest new artist of the year, 16-year-old New Zealander Lorde who sticks to # 3 with her massive smash of a début single ‘Royals‘ which sold another 263,000 units this week. Concurrently the song tops the Alternative Songs Chart for a 6th week, surpassing Alanis Morissette’s 5-week run with ‘You Oughta Know‘ as the longest running # 1 by a female vocalist on the Alternative Songs Chart. As I had already blogged months earlier – Lorde is destined for bigness!
Some massive action over at the Billboard 200 Albums Chart this week as well, as 6 new albums crash into the top 10, led by the # 1 début of Country superstar Keith Urban’s new album ‘Fuse‘ which sold 98,000 units this week, narrowly beating the Weeknd’s full length début effort ‘Kiss Land‘ which arrives at # 2 with 95,000 units sold.
Two of my fave albums of the year make their début within the top 10 this week, the first being Nu Soul/R’n'B chanteuse Janelle Monae’s sophomore album ‘The Electric Lady‘ which arrives at a career peak of # 5, selling over 47,000 units this week. The immensely talented Monae delivers yet again, as she did on her 2010 # 17-peaking début ‘The Archandroid : Suites II And III‘.
Pop/Rock Goddess supreme Sheryl Crow arrives at # 7 with her first Country effort and her 8th studio album ‘Feels Like Home‘ which bows with over 36,000 units sold this week. The set boasts of one of my fave songs this year ‘Easy‘, and becomes Crow’s 9th top 10 album, which includes all 8 of her studio albums and a greatest hits package.
