A gazillion fans (including me) were left broken-hearted when double-Grammy winners and possibly one of THE most promising bands (like Lady Antebellum-levels) in recent times – The Civil Wars – announced that ‘internal discord’ had driven the duo apart after their début album ‘Barton Hollow‘ literally slow-burned their way up the charts, eventually peaking at # 10 on the Billboard 200 and staying there for over an entire year, earning a Gold certification by the RIAA.
The indie-folk-country act comprising of Joy Williams and John Paul White picked up Grammy’s for Best Folk Album and Best Country Duo/Group Performance for the stellar ‘Barton Hollow‘ at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards, and then shocked the music world and fans alike by announcing a hiatus in November 2012.
There was way too much the band had to offer y’all, and this certainly sucks.
What doesn’t suck though, is that the band has decided to release their sophomore album before heading their separate ways.
The new album will be titled ‘The Civil Wars‘, and is scheduled for release on August 6th, and the first single titled ‘The One That Got Away‘ has just hit the airwaves.
‘The One That Got Away‘ displays the band’s usual brand of folk-country, but it’s certainly difficult to miss the ominous vibe through the minimal instrumentation.
‘I wish you were the one that got away..‘ wails Joy as John harmonizes with her perfect vocals over guitars and drums in the haunting number.
The drama definitely seems to have spilled over in this song, and history has shown us time and again, that bands who have washed their dirty laundry in public through their music have managed to reach the pinnacles of their careers doing so – Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumors‘ or No Doubt’s ‘Tragic Kingdom‘ anyone?
Lets just hope the success of this album urges the duo to rethink their decision about splitting. There’s way too much talent in there.
We need more from where this came from!
