Another Braxton set to blaze a trail following Toni? I’m very here for this.
Tamar Braxton, younger sister of soul songstress extraordinaire Toni Braxton, has finally unveiled the visual for ‘Love And War‘, her brand new single previewing her sophomore album of the same name. Yes, Tamar’s already an album old, and her début effort ‘Tamar‘ (initially released as ‘Ridiculous‘ in 1999) was a resounding flop back in 2000, debuting at # 127 on the Billboard charts, selling a modest 100,000 units (that figure would be quite a rage these days though).
Tamar’s sophomore extravaganza however, seems to be headed for a different fate, 13 years after her solo arrival.
Post her success as a reality TV star (‘Braxton Family Values‘), the soulful ‘Love And War‘ flew straight to # 1 on the iTunes chart, peaking at # 57 on the Billboard Hot 100, her first charting single there. The song is also headed for the top 10 on the Hot R’n’B/Hip Hop Songs Chart, having peaked at # 13 already.
‘Love And War‘ is a slice of old school nostalgia. At least for me. It reminds me of Toni’s straight-up no-holds-barred signature ballads that defined the sound of r’n’b in the 90’s. The Walid Azami-directed black and white clip is a passionate yet simple affair, with Tamar getting cozy with her man, trying to ease the palpable tension. Tamar looks gorgeous – a potent mix of vulnerable and sexy at the same time.
Shades of elder sister Toni’s signature sultry vocals are easily noticeable in Tamar’s vocal style – it’s a Braxton family thing y’all. Sounding irresponsibly erotic even when they’re sneezing. So the comparisons here are inevitable – but honestly, I don’t care. I’ve loved Toni’s vocals since forever, and having a legitimate family member belting out soul gems with a similar style is fine with me!
