After 3 weeks of shining bright (like a diamond) atop of the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart, Bajan banger Rihanna’s 12th chart-topper ‘Diamonds‘ gets bumped off the # 1 spot by r’n’b crooner Bruno Mars’ ‘Locked Out Of Heaven‘ – the lead single from his sophomore album ‘Unorthodox Jukebox‘ released earlier this week.
With ‘Locked..‘ ascending a spot to # 1 this week, Mars earns his 4th # 1 on the Hot 100 within a span of 2 years and 10 months since his first chart-topper ‘Nothin’ On You‘ by B.o.B on which he was a guest vocalist. A commendable feat indeed, considering that Mars is the first male artist in 48 years to collect his first four # 1 hits in that short a span. Pop superstar Bobby Vinton achieved the same feat in a span of 2 years and 6 months way back in 1948.
Although Rihanna’s ‘Diamonds‘ slips a notch down on the Hot 100, the song remains steady at # 1 on the R’n’B/Hip Hop Songs Chart for a 10th consecutive week and Radio Songs for a second week – thus being the most played song in the US this week again.
Over at the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, Slay-lor Swift’s ‘Red‘ makes an expected return to the pole position for a 4th non-consecutive week selling another 167,000 units this week in the US, dethroning Alicia Keys’ ‘Girl On Fire‘ which slips down to # 7 this week with sales of 77,000.
Rapper Wiz Khalifa earns this week’s highest new entry on the charts this week with his second studio album ‘O.N.I.F.C‘ arriving at # 2 with sales of over 141,000, staying comfortably ahead of Rod Stewart’s ‘Merry Christmas, Baby‘ which stays put at #3 with 127,000 units sold this week. With the holiday season on in full swing, Stewart might just top the charts over the next few weeks, unless Swift’s sales keeps up the way it is.
Rather a disappointing new entry this week is gutter-pop extravaganza Ke$ha’s sophomore album ‘Warrior‘, which arrives at # 6 with sales of over 85,000 units. Her début album ‘Animal‘ started at # 1 on the Billboard 200 with sales of over 152,000 units, fueled by the massive success of the lead single ‘Tik Tok‘ which spent 9 weeks atop the Hot 100. With ‘Die Young‘ – the lead single from ‘Warrior‘ being a certified smash on the Hot 100 (peaking at # 2 a fortnight ago) and the hype created over this project along with the holiday season, sales for ‘Warrior‘ have been alarmingly low. Really, it’s a sad state of affairs out there.
