Gabrielle Aplin’s ‘The Power Of Love’ Soars To # 1 On UK Top 40!

20-year-old English singer-songwriter Gabrielle Aplin’s version of Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s 1984 smash ‘The Power Of Love‘ makes a 5-spot leap on the official UK Top 40 Singles Chart this week to dethrone Olly Murs’ ‘Troublemaker‘ featuring Flo Rida, thus landing the acoustic covers specialist her first # 1 single!

Well deserved, and may I just add, flawless? Chill-inducing? Gorgeous?

The haunting cover, featured on the current ad campaign for the departmental store John Lewis, survives a stiff competition from r’n’b crooner Bruno Mars’ ‘Locked Out Of Heaven‘ (lagging behind by just 1,500 copies) and makes it all the way to # 1 in its 5th chart week – crowning the chart during the coveted month of December – arguably the toughest time of the year to crack the pole position. And the woman has yet to release her first full-length album. Bigness awaits her y’all.

The next new entry within the top 10 comes in the form of chart titan Pink’s second single ‘Try‘ from her global # 1 smash ‘The Truth About Love‘, which rises a massive 18 spots in its 10th chart week to land at # 8 on the singles chart. With a video this incredible, and live performances that slay anything that your faves have ever done, ‘Try‘ was pretty much destined for the top 10, having already cracked the top 20 in the US already.

Duh. It’s PINK. Are y’all really surprised?

The rest of the singles chart doesn’t see too many changes as usual suspects Rihanna, One Direction, Psy, Olly Murs, Alicia Keys, Labrinth, Emeli Sande maintain their presence within the top 10, and gutter-pop extravaganza Ke$ha reaches a new peak of #7 with her new smash ‘Die Young‘ from her sophomore album ‘Warrior‘ released earlier this week.

Over at the official UK Top 40 Albums Chart, Olly Murs maintains his lead as ‘Right Place, Right Time‘ moves another 103,000 units this week in the UK to give the 28-year old Essex-based vocalist and X Factor alumni a second week at # 1, ahead of Michael Buble’s former chart smash ‘Christmas‘ which rises to # 2 this week after slaying the charts last year – ending up as the second highest selling album of 2011, behind Adele’s ‘21‘.
