Rihanna Catches Up With Madonna And The Supremes As ‘Diamonds’ Becomes Her 12th Billboard # 1 Single!

Now THAT’S what I call some MAYJAH chart action y’all!!

It truly is a diva’s world out there – and it sorta feels like the 90’s all over again! Only this time around, it’s not Madonna, Janet, Whitney, Mariah and Celine taking control of the Billboard Charts. Two decades later, the crowns seem to have been unofficially passed on, as the Billboard Hot 100 sees a complete chart domination by the likes of a new breed of divas clearly in control of the game – Ke$ha, Taylor Swift, Adele, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and the one woman who seems to be the ONLY one ready enough to slay Mariah Carey’s record of 18 Hot 100 # 1 singles – Bajan banger Rihanna.

Maroon 5’s ‘One More Night‘ finally gets dethroned from the penthouse of the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart after a 9-week run by none other than Barbados bombshell Rihanna’s new single ‘Diamonds‘, which rises from # 2 to # 1 this week – becoming her 12th # 1 single in the US. Rihanna thus surpasses the legendary Whitney Houston (11 # 1 singles) and ties with none other than the Queen Of Pop Madonna and Motown legends the Supremes, both with 12 # 1 singles.

The only ones ahead of Rihanna? Michael Jackson (13), Mariah Carey (18) and The Beatles (20).

From her first # 1 single SOS, which spent 3 weeks at # 1 in May 2006, it has taken Rihanna precisely 6 years and 7 months to notch 12 # 1 hits, the fastest by a female artist surpassing Mariah who took 7 years and one and a half months to notch 12 # 1 hits.

For an artist with 12 Hot 100 # 1’s, it’s a surprise that Rihanna has yet to send an album atop the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, irrespective of 6 releases. All that seems set to change next week, as her 7th studio album ‘Unapologetic‘ is poised to possibly d├ębut at # 1 with estimated sales of up to 260,000 units sold in the US – the highest first week sales of her career!

The Rihanna reign just won’t let up y’all!

As Maroon 5’s ‘One More Night‘ slips down to # 2, the song ties with Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Call Me Maybe‘ officially as 2012’s longest running # 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Even if ‘Diamonds‘ manages an uninterrupted run at the top till the year ends, it’ll end up logging 7 weeks at the penthouse in 2012.

Rihanna’s immediate threat at the summit comes in the form of glitter-pop princess Ke$sha who remains a non-mover at # 3 with her new single ‘Die Young‘. Irrespective of staying put at # 3, the song roars ahead in airplay (being the greatest airplay gainer for a second week on Radio Songs). If the song soars in digital sales, it might have a chance to topple ‘Diamonds‘ soon.

Another interesting chart observation this week? There are NO featured guest artists on the entire top 10 of the Hot 100 Singles Chart – each charting song features just the solo artist or the group itself!
