One Direction Tops Busy Billboard 200, Christina Aguilera, Lana Del Rey, Green Day, Soundgarden Score Top 10 Debuts!

Well, it’s official. History does repeat itself!  Boyband mania has officially taken over this year (along with the young divas relentlessly slaying the charts on a regular basis), and much like The Beatles, New Kids On The Block, Take That, N’Sync and the Backstreet Boys – the teens from English-Irish boyband One Direction have reached the realms of pop super-stardom.

The band arrives at # 1 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart for the second time this year as their sophomore album ‘Take Me Home‘ roars in with sales of over a whopping 540,000 copies in the US this week, the third highest first-week sales this year following Taylor Swift’s ‘Red‘ and Mumford And Son’s ‘Babel‘. The band had also topped the chart earlier this year when they sent their début album ‘Up All Night‘ to # 1 in March.

One Direction also becomes the only group apart from Danity Kane to début at # 1 with their first two albums. The girls from Danity Kane debuted at # 1 with ‘Danity Kane‘ in 2006 and ‘Welcome To The Dollhouse‘ in 2008.

Elsewhere, making an unexpectedly somber début is one of the most highly anticipated albums of the year – pop royalty Christina Aguilera’s ‘Lotus‘. With underwhelming sales of over 73,000 units in the US this week, ‘Lotus‘ limps in at # 7 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart – her lowest charting official studio album in history. Too bad, since ‘Lotus‘ is easily one of the best albums released this year. Possibly due to lack of promo maybe? Of well, maybe it’ll slow burn its way up the charts and stick around for a bit, especially if power-ballads like ‘Blank Page‘, collaborations like ‘Just A Fool‘ with Blake Shelton and the rousing ‘Army Of Me‘ are released as singles.

A total of 7 albums début within the top 10 this hectic chart week, with new albums by The Weeknd, Green Day, Soundgarden, the soundtrack to ‘The Twilight SagaBreaking Dawn Pt 2‘ and Lana Del Rey’s new 8-song effort ‘Paradise‘ all making high entries on the charts.
