Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber Win Big At 2012 American Music Awards!

It was a night to remember for the Barbz and the Beliebers, as Mizz Harajuku Barbie aka Pottymouth Extraordinaire aka Nicki Minaj, undoubtedly THE biggest phenomenon hip-hop/rap has witnessed over the past few years, and pop star Justin Bieber were crowned the big winners at the 2012 American Music Awards, held at the Nokia Theatre, LA.

Nicki Minaj, whose sophomore smash ‘Pink Friday : Roman Reloaded‘ slayed records earlier this year by debuting atop the Billboard 200 Albums Chart as well as the UK Top 40 Albums Chart, took home trophies for Favorite Hip-Hop/Rap Artist as well as Favorite Hip-Hop/Rap Album for ‘Pink Friday : Roman Reloaded‘. ‘Shout-out to loyalty!!‘, Minaj beamed after winning her second trophy for the night. Clearly, the new American Idol judge has no intention of slowing down anytime soon.

Minaj also took to the stage to unveil her new single ‘Freedom‘, from the upcoming re-release of her sophomore album titled ‘Pink Friday : Roman Reloaded – The Re-Up‘, and then joined Justin Bieber for her fiery verse on their collaboration ‘Beauty And A Beat‘.

Justin Bieber took home 3 trophies, including Favorite Pop/Rock Male, Favorite Pop/Rock Album for his Billboard # 1 album ‘Believe‘ as well as the coveted Artist Of The Year Award. The cutest part of the show? Mama Bieber accompanying Justin onstage to collect his trophy. Truly aww-inducing. Bieber and Minaj were the only ones to bag multiple wins last night.

Carly Rae Jepsen, whose ‘Call Me Maybe’ remains the longest running # 1 single of the year locking 9 weeks at # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (along with Maroon 5’s ‘One More Night‘ as of now) took home the trophy for New Artist Of The Year, presented to her by the Backstreet Boys. Jepsen also delivered an EDM influenced live rendition of ‘This Kiss‘, before delving into her signature smash ‘Call Me Maybe‘.

Taylor Swift, of course, had to win something. For a 5th consecutive year, Swift took home the trophy for Favorite Country Female Award, her 11th American Music Award in all. Are we surprised? Duh! And of course Taylor had a grand performance up her sleeve, slaying the stage with her rendition of her dubstep influenced ‘I Knew You Were Trouble‘ from her new album ‘Red‘, which debuted with astounding sales of over 1.21 million copies in its first week.

Carrie Underwood took home the trophy for Favorite Country Album for her # 1 smash ‘Blown Away‘, easily one of the best albums of the year, while Lady Antebellum won for Favorite Country Duo/Band/Group.

Few nominees went back empty-handed as everybody from Katy Perry, Maroon 5, Beyonce, Rihanna, David Guetta, Usher, Luke Bryan, Shakira, tobyMac, Linkin Park and Adele took home a trophy each.

As far as live performances were concerned, pop titan Pink was undoubtedly the best of the lot, as per usual, as she delivered a stunning rendition of her new single ‘Try‘, with her insane brand of acrobatics infused with ballet, recreating the explosive video on stage. There was a collection of wigs left at the door post this impeccably flaw-less rendition.

But it was current global phenomenon Psy who TOTALLY brought the house down by closing the AMA’s with his viral smash ‘Gangnam Style‘, featuring a special appearance by none other than rapper MC Hammer who blended in his 1990 smash ‘Too Legit To Quit‘.
