CHEESE-FEST ALERT Y’ALL!
Bow down to the awesomeness that was the 90’s people, cuz it’s time I gave a much-needed shout-out to some insane dance-pop that shaped the sound of an entire generation back in the day. For any 90’s baybeh like me, dance-pop was as essential as breathing. Sure you had your rock’n’roll and the divas and R’n’B that was ruling the 90’s, but no genre had an impact as incredible as dance-pop – to the extent that there was an entire revival of the era by the second half of the 00’s, with Madonna (as per usual) having the balls (literally) to experiment with Euro-pop with her genre bending 2005 smash ‘Confessions On A Dance Floor‘. And then of course, Lady Gaga happened. It’s been more than half a decade, and there seems to be no sign of slowing down for the genre. This generation literally has their very own ‘Macarena‘ – in the form of Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style‘ sitting comfortably at the top of almost every credible chart on the planet. From relative newbies like Rihanna, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown, Ke$ha to veterans like Usher, Toni Braxton, Britney Spears – have all jumped ship, to comfortably land aboard the dance-pop train. And they owe their sound to a generation of artists who pioneered and popularized the genre back in the 90’s.
While hanging out with some friends today, I got into a discussion about the flawlessness that was Australian singer/DJ Gina G’s ‘Ooh Aah..Just A Little Bit‘, a pop gem that was huge back in 1996! And of course the song HAD to make it on today’s Throwback Tuesday (thanks Yuvi!). Playing this song real loud on the stereo was THE in-thing to do for a generation of kids like me, and I’m pretty sure you secretly played this one like it was nobody’s bizness while boasting about your Pink Floyd and Iron Maiden cassette collection #epicfail. Come on.. y’all have memories of what you were upto when this song was relentlessly being rotated on MTV.. admit it!
‘Ooh Aah..Just A Little Bit‘, taken from Gina’s début album ‘Fresh‘ was a worldwide smash, roaring its way up to # 1 on the UK Top 40, knocking off George Michael’s epic ‘Fastlove‘ from the penthouse, as well as topping the charts in Asia. The song also peaked within the top 10 in Australia and Europe, while peaking at # 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 (for a Euro-pop song, making it to the upper half of the Billboard Charts was an accomplishment). Even today, I bump this song on a regular basis on my playlist – it’s just one of those numbers that deserves a whole lotta credit than it generally gets. Imagine Gaga, Ke$ha or Rihanna re-creating this song today. Is there any way this song would have not been a # 1 global smash? I cannot think of any.
