Metallica is considered as one of the most influential heavy metal bands of all time. From their début in 1981, they’ve sold over 100 million albums worldwide including 59 million in the US alone! The status of Metal Gods is by no means overstated. Metallica has persevered over 3 decades and always done things their own way never listening to what anyone else thinks and have kept their music relevant to this day. Ask any heavy metal band, worth their salt today, about who inspired them and the likeliest name to pop up is quite obvious.
Metallica themselves were inspired by early heavy metal and hard rock Legends such as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple.
Deep Purple’s 1972 album ‘Machine Head‘ is the focus of Metallica’s new album ‘Re-Machined‘. Machine Head was DP’s 6th studio album and is regarded as one of the most influential albums in the rise and development of the heavy metal genre.
It peaked at No.1 on the UK Top 40 Albums Chart and at No.7 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, where it stayed for a massive 118 weeks!
Deep Purple had a whole slew of line-up changes throughout their time. One of whom was the late Jon Lord. This ‘Jimi Hendrix of keys’ as I like to call him, was known and revered for his amazing ability of fusing classical and rock genres seamlessly.
A good example of this would be Deep Purple’s live performance of ‘Lazy‘, one of their lesser known gems.
Jon Lord passed away on the 16th of July this year. May he R.I.P. It is in their hero’s memory that Metallica have decided to record a tribute album.
Now just Metallica recording a tribute album for Deep Purple would be quite big by itself. But in the world of music, things can always be bigger. So here it is, a list of all the artists involved in this tribute album:
Chickenfoot (Joe Satriani)
Black Label Society (Zakk Wylde)
Kings Of Chaos
The Flaming Lips
Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple)
THAT! is one sick tribute album! And these guys are recording most of Deep Purple’s greatest hits, that were all part of ‘Machine Head’, like:
1. Smoke On The Water
2. Highway Star
4. When A Blind Man Cries
5. Space Truckin’
Metallica : When A Blind Man Cries
Re-machined is set for release on 25th September. The special ‘fan pack’ includes interviews with music royalties such as Steve Vai, Joe Bonamassa and of course the legend Jon Lord himself. I don’t see how anybody cannot be excited to get their hands on this one.
