Throwback Tuesday – Aerosmith’s ‘I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing’

It’s AEROSMITH rockin’ our Throwback Tuesday post of the week y’all! Get your asses out of your seats and take a bow!

The Bad Boys from Boston have certainly had a prolonged run on the charts – 40 years to be precise – and are undoubtedly Rock’n’Roll legends. A discography that boasts of a mind-boggling 150 million albums sold worldwide, 4 Grammy’s, 10 MTV VMA’s, 21 Top 40 Hits on the Billboard Hot 100, an induction in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, as well as the record for the most number of Gold, Platinum and Multi-Platinum albums by any group in the US – Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer and Brad Whitford have a lot to be proud of! And with their 15th studio album ‘Music From Another Dimension‘ scheduled for a November 6th release – these guys have no intention of slowing down anytime soon, really.

My fave Aerosmith song gets a well deserved shout-out today, and I’m pretty sure a whole lotta you will be very here to celebrate the gem that is ‘I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing‘. A totally lush Rock-tinged power-ballad, the Dianne Warren (who else!) penned ‘I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing‘ was released in 1998, and was included in the soundtrack of the film Armageddon. Now I belong to that group of people who have no recollection of what the film was all about, but I do remember each film snippet shown in the video for the song – such was the power of this classic. That, and the fact I really wasn’t much into the whole sci-fi drama scene – give me Notting Hill and Runaway Bride any day (yes, mush ROCKS).

I ask you, how many of you still experience chills when the starting strains of the song begins – the violin intro specifically, with the moon and asteroids zooming away in the video? If you do – you’re a 90’s baybeh like me! Ah nostalgia. And immediately after the camera zooms in on earth – we’re directed towards Steven Tyler – who begins crooning away with the fattest lips in the history of ever! Not that I mind at all tbh. The Francis Lawrence-directed clip still remains one of my fave videos of all time! Positively chill-inducing in a very goose-bumpy kinda way.

I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing‘ introduced the band to a whole new audience (especially the ones who were suckers for a Celine Dion-ish kinda ballad ruling the airwaves and the charts back in ’98, and had never experienced an Aerosmith record before), eventually debuting at # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, dethroning the unstoppable Brandy and Monica’s epic ‘The Boy Is Mine‘. Till date, the song remains the band’s biggest hit, spending 4 weeks at # 1 before being toppled over by the then unstoppable Monica, who reigned supreme with ‘The First Night‘ for 5 weeks after dethroning Aerosmith. It’s amazing how HUGE songs from Original Soundtracks were back then – think Celine’s  ‘My Heart Will Go On‘ (but obviously), Diana King’s  ‘Say A Little Prayer‘ and Shania Twain’s ‘You’ve Got Away‘. The song eventually got an Academy Award nomination as well, losing out to the incomparable Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey’s ‘When You Believe‘, and of course I wasn’t mad, after all it’s religion that we’re talking about here.
