This is all too nostalgic y’all! The late Aaliyah was arguably one of the most phenomenal R’n’B vocalists to have arrived in the 90’s – and her music and sound was THE blueprint for the future of R’n’B/Hip-Hop/Soul that we get to hear today. Essentially, the flawless songbird was way, WAY ahead of her time. After her tragic passing in 2001, there’s been no one close enough to fill her shoes – and her influence and legacy lives on more than a decade after her death, with strains of her musical style evident in everyone from Ciara to Rihanna.
The internet was abuzz last week with rumors of a new posthumous album by Aaliyah, spearheaded by one of her biggest fans, Drake. And I, for one, am not really a huge fan of posthumous releases, solely cuz I feel that the artist might not have wanted the songs to have sounded any other way. But after hearing Aaliyah’s new unreleased track today titled ‘Enough Said‘ featuring Drake, I had to literally sit down. The starting strains of the song where Aaliyah’s mesmerizing vocals take over are enough to send chills down any Aaliyah fan’s spine. Produced by Noah ’40’ Shebib, ‘Enough Said‘ sounds exactly like a fresh new Aaliyah song released in 2012 – it’s incredible how she was always on another level back in the day to have sounded so amazing and relevant even today! Sparse instrumentation, Aaliyah’s lush and dreamy vocals and a well placed verse by Drake makes this one a clear winner. Now I honestly can’t wait for a new album y’all, but I still feel a posthumous Aaliyah album would not be complete without Timbaland and Missy Elliott. No one knew or understood Aaliyah better than they did, so if there is a possibility of an album, it should be with Timbaland, Missy and Drake. Meanwhile check out ‘Enough Said‘ right here :
