BOW DOWN HONEYZ AND HEARTBREAKERS AND GET READY TO TOUCH YOUR BODIES CUZ YOU WILL MAKE IT THROUGH THE RAIN AFTER A BREAKDOWN WHEN A HERO COMES ALONG, WITH WHOM YOU WILL BELONG TOGETHER UNDERNEATH THE STARS FOLLOWING A VISION OF LOVE, ONLY WHEN YOU BELIEVE.
Very evidently, I’m a Mariah fanatic. Bada Bing!
The incomparable Mariah Carey (always imitated never duplicated) has finally bestowed upon her worldwide legion of fans aka lambs aka lambily, what happens to be her latest single – the poignantly titled ‘Triumphant (Get ‘Em)‘ featuring Rick Ross and Meek Mills.
Today morning, approximately at around 6 AM Indian Standard Time, I happened to drag my lazy backside out of bed JUST SO I COULD LISTEN TO MARIAH’S NEW SINGLE. Commitment, fanaticism, religion – whatever you may call it – call it. Of course every possible music blog in the history of ever was chock-a-block with reviews and comments about the living legend’s new single (but DUH). And as per usual, there was a whole lotta hate following each and every blog post and song review – especially this time around – as compared to when ‘Obsessed‘ and ‘Touch My Body‘ premiered. Even my friend Varun, who happens to be the biggest lamb in this part of the subcontinent sent in a morose Whatsapp and Facebook message saying ‘It’s OK, it’ll grow on me‘ – which extrapolated to ‘it was crappy and what in the world was she thinking‘. So it was with no expectation at all, that I clicked ‘play‘.
Here’s the deal. One listen to ‘Triumphant (Get ‘Em)‘ – and I FACKIN’ FELL IN LOVE WITH THE SONG. Period. The reason? The Jermaine Dupri and Bryan Michael Cox produced single harks back to Mariah’s sound during the ‘Butterfly‘ era of 1997 – and the general vibe of the song uncannily reminds me of the song ‘Breakdown‘ featuring Bone Thugs-N-Harmony – one of my fave Mariah singles of ALL time. The mid-tempo R’n’B jam has a texture that no Mariah song has had lately – featuring layered silky vocals sans her vocal acrobatics, focusing more on the incredible harmony that sounds positively gorgeous, rather than focusing on unnecessary tactics to stretch her pipes. The general feel of the song? Honeyed, rich and warm. Of course the positive and uplifting lyrics help.
The drawback of the song, which might have ticked off some of her most loyal fans, is that there’s not too much of Mariah in the song. Which is true, considering that there’s way too much of rapping by Rick Ross and Meek Mills. The other drawback being that there’s probably nothing new about this song, it’s a tried and tested formula that has given Mariah a handful of # 1 singles in the past. And that, is not exactly a bad thing. I love the Hip-Hop Mariah – ‘Butterfly‘, ‘Rainbow‘ and ‘Daydream‘ remain my faves. It’s natural for fans to expect her to return with her pipes blaring, and the subdued and sublime nature of the single was quite unexpected.
My love affair with Mariah is a prolonged deal – I’ve been a fanatic since I was a pre-teen. The thing is, this woman never ceases to amaze me. Funnily, I wasn’t having a good day today, it’s just one of those days when everything seems to be falling apart – and here comes Mariah Carey with a new single that was EXACTLY what I needed to hold on and make it through the day. HOW DOES SHE DO IT?
