It’s Throwback Tuesday y’all! Time to give a major shout out to a song that slayed back in the day!
4-time Grammy winning icon, animal and human rights activist, and a champion of gay rights – Canadian singer/songwriter/actress Kathryn Dawn Lang aka k.d. lang is nothing short of an enigma. And it’s Mizz Lang’s signature song ‘Constant Craving‘ that graces our Throwback Tuesday post of the week.
The song is taken from k.d. lang’s sophomore solo album ‘Ingenue‘ released in 1992 – my favorite album by her – as well as her most successful album till date, being certified double platinum in the US by the RIAA. It’s with ‘Ingenue‘ that Miss Lang made the leap from being a Country vocalist to an Adult Contemporary chart staple – giving up her Nashville influenced sounds for more mature and smoldering productions. ‘Constant Craving‘ was lyrically bold, passionate and conveyed a palpable yearning. Vocally, k.d. lang’s spectacular alto could easily bring up comparisons with Sade. Although a tad depressive, ‘Constant Craving‘ is a stunning blend of layered vocals and compelling melodies – and it truly represents k.d.lang’s consummate artistry.
Maybe a great magnet pulls
All souls towards truth
Or maybe it is life itself
That feeds wisdom
To its youth
Has always been
May I just add – sublime? Mind-blowing? Lush?
‘Constant Craving‘ peaked at # 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts, eventually winning the 1993 Grammy for the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, as well as a surprise win at the 1993 MTV VMA for the Best Female Video – beating none other than front-runner and chart titan Janet Jackson’s ‘That’s The Way Love Goes‘. If soul infused lush productions are your thing – I’d suggest you buy ‘Ingenue‘ and give it a listen.
