The Koreans have done it. The Japanese have done it. The Indians have done it as well! Asia certainly is an intriguing cornucopia of music exports that randomly, and now rather regularly feature on mainstream American charts. And now it’s time for Malaysia to claim a share of the spotlight! Malaysian songbird Yuna Zarai has come a long way from being a massive star in her native country, to performing at the MTV Studios at Times Square in New York, grabbing a record deal, producing a song with Pharrell, and releasing her début English album in the US.
Yuna’s music sounds like a breathy amalgamation of Feist-meets-Sade-meets-Dido. Releasing a stunning Electro-Folk cover of Nirvana’s ‘Come As You Are‘ propelled her into the spotlight, following which she was chosen by MTV Iggy as one of the nominees for ‘Best Band In The World‘.
Yuna’s first single from her self-titled début album is called ‘Live Your Life‘, and I’m going totally bonkers about this one! The song is an absolutely lush bongo-based track with Yuna’s breathy and calm vocals sounding positively exquisite. Lets just say that in case you’ve overplayed Sade on your lounge playlist, Yuna is a safe bet to keep it mellow! The video for ‘Live Your Life‘ is as classy and intimate as the song. Yuna’s full-length English language début album ‘Yuna‘ is out now in the US. Definitely an artist to watch out for!
