Throwback Tuesday : ‘How Can I Not Love You’ By Joy Enriquez

It’s Throwback Tuesday again! My fave post of the entire week y’all!

So here’s the deal. I’m a sucker for a good ol’ fashioned love song. And I’m not ashamed to admit that I love having a good howl while listening to one (that’s right, my heart has been broken before FYI).

So this week I’m gonna feature a love song (Bada Bing!) that wasn’t exactly a huge chart-buster, especially in the US, but the song did have a good chart run in Asia, Australia, New Zealand etc. I believe Joy Enriquez’s ‘How Can I Not Love You‘ is undoubtedly one the most under-rated love songs of all time, and in case you’re in the mood for a little mush, sans the overt sugar-coating, this is exactly what you need to listen to!

For those of you who do not know who Joy Enriquez is, she’s an American singer-actress married to none other than Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins, one of the most prolific song-writers of our time. If you’ve watched the movie ‘Anna And The King‘ starring Jodie Foster and Chow Yun-fat, you might have come across the song ‘How Can I Love You‘ sung by Joy playing over the end-credits, while the theme music for the entire film was based on this song. And the video was quite a hit in Asia and Australia back in 1999.

I have to admit that I watched the movie cuz of this song, so mesmerized I was by Joy’s flawless vocals! The way she sang the song conveyed a literally palpable pain, and the song was just a simple love song with nothing but some heart-felt lyrics woven around a soothing rich melody. And that’s what was so intriguing about the song, its innocence. Vocally, Joy could give any of the young crop of divas like Britney, Christina and Jessica, pall-bearers of the teen-pop revolution of the late 90’s, a run for their money. In case you’ve watched the movie, there’s a scene in which a monk who falls in love with the youngest queen of Siam gets caught, and both the queen and the monk are beheaded in public, their crime being their irrevocable love for each other. The precise moment before their heads are chopped off , they turn and look into each other’s eyes, while the instrumental version of the song plays in the background. That literally send shivers down my spine, and I  remember experiencing goosebumps in places that I didn’t know could have goosebumps! And of course I howled like it was nobody’s bizness.

Apart from the soundtrack of ‘Anna And The King‘, the song was also included in Joy’s self titled début album in 1999. The album spawned another international hit ‘Tell Me How You Feel‘ that was a regular on my disc-man back then, and was a moderate hit in the US as well, along with charting high all over Asia and Australia. Unfortunately Joy could never match the success of her debut album later on, and she released just one album, ‘Atmosphere Of Heaven‘ in 2006 as the follow up to her first. A pity, especially since she has the vocal prowess that could match up to any of today’s biggest vocalists, and ironically she’s married to one of the most influential song-writers of all time. To date, I consider ‘How Can I Not Love You‘ as one of my fave songs of all time, and it definitely deserves a long overdue shout-out on my blog. Check it out!
