It’s Tuesday again! Exciting eh? So give it up for the Queen of Rock and Roll gracing our post today!
Anna Mae Bullock aka Tina Turner is a living legend. Period. I mean have you seen the woman rock the stage at the ripe young age of 69, reducing Beyoncé to a bib-wearing clumsy school girl compared to her at the 50th Grammy Awards? With over 150 million records sold worldwide and a career spanning over 50 years, how could I not dedicate a Throwback Tuesday post to Tina? That, in Madonna’s words, would be reductive. And in my words, blasphemous.
Today we give a shout-out to Tina Turner’s biggest hit, a song that defined the sound of an era and her most successful single till date, ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It‘.
Tina’s lustrous voice was probably the reason I fell in love with this song in the first place. Released in 1984, the song was the second single from her 5th studio album ‘Private Dancer‘ in the US, and the third single in Europe (she released a cover of The Beatles’ ‘Help‘ as the second single there). The most astonishing fact about the song? Tina Turner was 45 years old when ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It‘ topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 3 weeks, and even more incredible was the fact that Tina never had a solo top 10 hit before this song, although she had released 4 albums previously, apart from her collaborations with Ike Turner, her ex-husband. Tina was thus the oldest solo female vocalist to hit # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, until Cher broke her record with ‘Believe‘ in 1999. Cher was a gorgeous 53 years young then!
By numbers itself, the album reigned supreme. ‘Private Dancer‘ moved 20 million copies worldwide, peaking at # 3 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart and # 2 on the UK Top 40, and is the highest selling album of Tina’s career. The album won her 4 out of the 6 Grammy’s she was nominated for, 3 for the song ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It‘ itself, including the prestigious Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year as well as Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female in 1985. And along with the widespread critical acclaim, the song was also a hit with the MTV generation, as it won the MTV VMA for the Best Female Video in 1985. In 2012, ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It‘ was inducted in the Grammy Hall Of Fame.
It’s amazing how Tina’s solo career really took off after the age of 45, an age which most conventional Pop and Rock stars decide to slow down, and following ‘Private Dancer‘, Tina released a string of albums, all of which became multi-million sellers and global smashes. ‘Private Dancer‘ is still my fave Tina album, along with her 1999 album ‘Twenty Four Seven‘, which is also one of her best works, although grossly under-rated. In case you wanna browse through Tina’s work, I’d suggest you buy Tina’s 2004 compilation album ‘All The Best‘. That album pretty much covers all the major hits of her career, along with some of her best singles that never really made it big, like ‘Why Must We Wait Until Tonight‘ or ‘Whatever You Need‘. Nothing but classics! After all, legends like Tina come once in a while!
