Looks like the Femcee is officially back! Back in the late 80’s and early 90’s, it was Queen Latifah, Da Brat and MC Lyte who were the only female MC’s in the game. In the late 90’s, it was Lil’ Kim who revolutionized the concept and image of a female Rapper, while Missy Elliott changed the face of Rap music with her unique one-of-a-kind style. With Foxy Brown, Eve and Lauryn Hill ruling the game along with Missy and Kim, female Rappers were at the forefront of Rap music in the late 90’s and early 00’s. While most of the mid 00’s was marked by a conspicuous absence of female rappers, especially cuz of internal rivalries and feuds (the Lil’ Kim-Foxy Brown feud probably being the most legendary of them all) as well as health issues faced by Missy and Lauryn, the late 00’s saw the arrival of Nicki Minaj who resurrected the image of the Femcee and elevated it to staggering new heights. With back to back # 1 albums and top 10 singles, Nicki refused to be defined by the norms, and she dabbled in all genres of music while effortlessly blending in fierce rap verses. With Nicki presently on a global domination spree with her sophomore album ‘Pink Friday : Roman Reloaded‘ that has just topped the Billboard 200 as well as the UK Top 40 earlier this week, there’s no better time for the other femcees to stage a comeback! Missy’s on board, and so is Eve..with comeback albums in store later this year. If only Lil’ Kim could stop dissing anything and everything that moved and concentrated on recreating the genre-bending music she created back in 1996 when she released her double platinum smash début album ‘Hardcore‘, things would have been just perfect! And while the veterans slowly inch their way back, two newbies in the game have already worked up their respective fan-bases to start a feud even before their début albums drop! While American Rapper Azealia Banks is already a big name in Europe with her new single ‘212‘ featuring Lazy Jay charting in different territories, Australian Rapper Iggy Azalea just unveiled the new video for her single ‘Murda Bizness‘ featuring Rap titan T.I., taken from her upcoming début album ‘The New Classic‘.
Looks like it’s 1997 all over again, with the Femcee dominating, as well as the feuds! Nicki and Kim were already at it, and Eve recently made a few comments on Iggy and Nicki. And now Iggy and Azealia are at it as well! And apparently Azealia’s going at Nicki too! Darn, with the potential hits being churned out by them, can’t they all just forget about squabbling for a bit and collaborate instead? In the meantime here’s Iggy’s new video ‘Murda Bizness‘ featuring T.I. right here :
