Songstress Supreme, Icon, Goddess, Inspiration, and overall awesomeness Mizz Mariah Carey turns 42 today! And since she’s one of the main reasons why music is an integral part of everything I do, not wishing her on my blog would just be plain #reductive.
One blog post is seriously not enough for me to highlight her achievements. One of the highest selling vocalists of all time with over 200 million albums sold, Mariah Carey is every chart fanatic’s muse. Her achievements have been nothing short of spectacular! 18 # 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 (second only to The Beatles with 20), the first 5 of which were consecutive # 1 singles (another record), the longest and second longest stay atop the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with ‘One Sweet Day‘ (16 weeks) and ‘We Belong Together‘ (14 weeks), both of which went on to become the biggest hit of the 90’s and the 00’s respectively, a record cumulative 79 weeks spent at # 1 on the Hot 100 (comparatively, The Beatles spent 59 weeks), Mariah’s chart achievements have time and again made me sit up and gawk. Could your faves ever? Didn’t think so.
And lets not even get into her music cuz I might just spend the entire day writing about her impact on pop culture as a whole. Mariah’s music transcends across all barriers, and inspires a worldwide legion of fans till today. No Idol/X Factor/ The Voice performer has made it through the grind without following Mariah’s work. The point is, there would be no Christina, Adele and the host of other newbies doing their thing if it hadn’t been for Mariah. Her signature 5 octave vocal range and the whistle registers are always imitated, never duplicated (the intro to the literally addictive ‘Heartbreaker‘ remix y’all), and time and again, she’s redefined the word ‘Diva‘. Don’t judge me, we’ve all tried hitting those notes and ended up failing miserably, and that’s absolutely normal.
Choosing a fave Mariah song would be impossible for me. Period. For me, old school Mariah’s the best. Everything from ‘Hero‘ to ‘My All‘ to ‘Love Takes Time‘ to ‘Can’t Let Go‘. Although I have to say her 2008 # 1 single ‘Touch My Body‘ is probably my fave Mariah song of the last decade. That’s right, I like it more than ‘We Belong Together‘ (Lambs of the world might just commence mass hysteria after this statement).
Like every dedicated Lamb out there, I too have my special playlist of Mariah songs that were either non-singles, b-sides or they never really made it big on the charts. And I know how passionate her fans are about songs like these that reach out to them. Endless discussions with one of the biggest Lambs on the planet, Varun, who happens to be one of my closest friends and my Mariah-bitch in crime have made me realize that. ‘Breakdown‘ would be an all time fave. Also ‘Petals‘, ‘Clown‘, ‘Stay The Night‘, ‘Migrate‘, ‘For The Record‘ etc are just some of those incredible numbers that I’ve actually enjoyed more than songs like ‘One Sweet Day‘.
That’s right. Mariah’s incredible. Her voice has seen us fans through it all. Made us laugh, cry, sing, dance and think. For 20 years I’ve been a fan, and I cannot wait to see where she takes us over the next 20. Thank you for the music Mimi!
