It’s Throwback Tuesday again people! Put your hands in the air and give it up for a BIG ASS song that made a mark back in the day!
It’s time to get a little mellow with Green Day this week y’all. I mean how can we NOT love Green Day? We all grew up with the band, you’d be the cool kid in school if you owned a Green Day cassette, and the fact that they cater to a brand new generation every time they release a new album while keeping their old fan-base happy just makes them one of the most successful rock bands of all time . A decade and a half before you, your grandma, your maid and your pet walrus were all poignantly grooving to ‘Boulevard Of Broken Dreams‘ (it’s ridiculous how popular that song was in 2005-06), Green Day released their début album ‘39/Smooth‘ in 1990.
It was with their 3rd album ‘Dookie‘, released in 1994 that Green Day achieved their breakthrough success. Widely considered one of the greatest albums of all time, ‘Dookie‘ won the band their first Grammy, and went on to sell 16 million copies worldwide, peaking at # 2 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart and achieved a Diamond certification the US for shipments of over 10 million copies in the US alone.
Today we feature a song from Green Day’s 5th album ‘Nimrod‘, that happens to be one of my fave songs and albums of all time. Released in 1997, ‘Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)‘ was easily one of the best songs Green Day has ever recorded to date. A lush, acoustic and mellow track written by lead vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong about a break-up with his then girlfriend, the song was on constant rotation on MTV, and the video became a rage, later earning the band their first MTV VMA for Best Alternative Video. The single also became a cross-over hit worldwide, and ‘Nimrod‘ went on to sell over 6 million copies globally.
The song was and still is a staple at graduation parties, farewells, funerals etc, and here’s a lyric video just in case you wanna sing along.
And in case you’re a fan already, you might just wanna rejoice cuz Billie Joe Armstrong announced earlier last week that the band is finally returning after a three-year hiatus with their 9th studio album, their first after the 2009 ‘21st Century Breakdown‘ that topped and peaked within the top 5 of almost every music chart worldwide, sold over 4 million copies, and won the band their 4th out of 5 Grammy’s.
With Madonna, Macy Gray, Bruce Springsteen, Mariah Carey, Brandy, Faith Hill, Monica, Christina Aguilera, Missy Elliott and now Green Day announcing their return, 2012 is certainly a HUGE year as far as comebacks are concerned!
