The Queen Of Hip-Hop/Soul, winner of 9 Grammy Awards, songstress supreme, ICON, pioneer, trend-setter, one of my biggest inspirations of all time and the pin-up girl of courage, Mary J Blige turns 41 today, and we at zomgtalk wish the Queen a Happy Birthday!
For 20 years Mary has changed the game, kept it real, and bared her soul for the world to see, and in that process amassed a worldwide legion of fans and followers who have been inspired and touched by her music and stories.
Few can boast of such street credibility as well as class that commands respect wherever she goes. Her music speaks for itself, and for 20 years since her début in 1992 with the genre-bending ‘What’s The 411?’, Mary has ruled the game with ground-breaking chart-topping albums, 10 of which have peaked within the top 10 of the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, 4 reaching #1, heart-wrenching stories through song, her signature power-house vocals that seem to improve with every passing year, and live performances that are a class part, and today she stands as the most successful female R’n’B vocalist in the history of contemporary music with over 50 million albums sold world-wide!
I’ve been a fan of Mary for over a decade and a half now, and I’ll most likely to play a MJB album if I’m down or I need a little jolt. Mary’s ‘No More Drama’, ‘My Life’, ‘The Breakthrough’, ‘Share My Life’ and ‘Mary’ have all found a place among my fave albums of all time, and her journey through her troubles and her triumphant victory have inspired me and helped me through some of the toughest phases of my life. And for that I’ll be forever thankful to this flaw-free diva.
Mary’s new album ‘My Life II, The Journey Continues (Act 1)’ is out now, and is her best work in more than half a decade. Check it out y’all, and read the zomgtalk review here.
