Before Lady Gaga had unleashed her platinum fire-spewing bra and danced with a half-skeleton and given birth mid-space, Missy Elliott had danced around in an oversized black polythene bag, spat inside of someone’s mouth, decorated her face with a swarm of bees and unleashed mayhem on the music-scene, all a decade and a half ago. Have you seen the video for ‘Work It’ or ‘Lose Control’? I rest my case.
The most prolific female rapper of all time, Missy ‘Misdemeanor’ Elliot was undoubtedly a phenomenon even before her début single and album ‘Supa Dupa Fly‘ dropped in 1997, through her work as a producer for ground breaking acts like Aaliyah. And when she debuted her solo effort, the rap world had seen or heard NOTHING like her. Crazy infectious beats, ground breaking videos and keeping Hip-Hop real and fun, Missy went on to become one of the highest selling and globally respected rappers of all time.
Her discography is nothing short of phenomenal, with 6 albums, each of which has been certified Platinum, Double Platinum and Gold in the US, and has sold equally well worldwide (a feat that’s rare with Rap artists whose bulk sales are generated in the US mostly). The hits kept on coming, and if you think the artists today are doing it big, you really oughta give up your entire life and browse through Missy’s videography. With 5 Grammy Awards to her credit, Missy re-defined Rap and Hip-Hop through her music, and till date there’s been no one quite like her, with Lil’ Kim, Foxy Brown and more recently Nicki Minaj managing to create a fraction of her legacy.
One of my favorite videos and songs of all time is Missy’s début single ‘The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)‘. I still remember watching the video for the first time and gawking like it was nobody’s bizness. The groove of the song was infectious enough, and when Missy danced around in black lipstick embracing her over-weight self going all kindsa crazy, that was just everything! Check it out yourself.
The album ‘Supa Dupa Fly’ was a benchmark for rap albums, being certified Platinum in the US, and peaking at # 3 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, blazing a trail for others to follow. It’s been a while since Missy released new material, her last studio album being the thoroughly impressive ‘The Cookbook’ in 2005.
2012 is the year Missy’s scheduled to make a come-back with her new album tentatively titled ‘Block Party’. With Nicki Minaj upping the game for Rap music, it’s only fair the supreme Queen Of Rap rightfully returns to her throne. Can’t wait for some new Missy y’all!
