Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’ Dethrones ‘Moves Like Jagger’ From # 1 On Billboard Hot 100

In a shocker of a move, Adele’s second single ‘Someone Like You‘ soars from # 19 to # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart this week, following her stunning rendition of the song at the 2011 MTV VMA’s last week. ‘Someone Like You‘ becomes Adele’s 2nd consecutive # 1 single in the US following her 7-week run at # 1 with ‘Rolling In The Deep‘. The single has also topped the UK Singles Chart for 4 weeks. Following her VMA performance, the song sold a whopping 275,000 digital copies last week. Also, it’s been ages since a ballad topped the Hot 100, and Adele seems to be ushering in a different era of music altogether.

Someone Like You‘ pushes last week’s topper ‘Moves Like Jagger‘ by Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera to # 2. A huge number of artists benefit from their performances on the 2011 MTV VMA’s last week, including Lady Gaga who shoots up 10 spots from # 16 to # 6 with ‘You And I‘, thus giving her an astounding 11 consecutive Top 10 singles, her entire chart output ever since she topped the chart with ‘Just Dance‘. Foster The People’s ‘Pumped Up Kicks‘ stays put at # 3.

Similarly Cobra Starship and Sabi charges up 10 places from # 18 to # 8 with their single ‘You Make Me Feel..’ after their performance of the song on the VMA pre-show. Beyoncé debuts at # 20 with ‘Love On Top‘ following her outstanding performance of the song followed by the announcement of her pregnancy, her highest chart début since 2006’s ‘Ring The Alarm‘ that debuted at # 11. And Nicki Minaj rebounds from # 6 to # 5 with ‘Superbass‘ following her win for Best Hip Hop Video.

There’s a whole lotta action over at the Billboard 200 Albums Chart as well, where Lil Wayne’s ‘The Carter 4‘ debuts at # 1 with an astounding 964,000 copies sold in its first week! The figure marks the 2nd highest first week sales by an album, behind the 1.11 million units Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way‘ shifted in its debut week. The Red Hot Chili Peppers début at # 2 with ‘I’m With You‘. A huge number of albums face a major boost in sales following the MTV VMA’s last week, including the biggest selling album of the year, Adele’s ’21’, which stays at # 3. Beyoncé’s ‘4’ returns to the Top 10 after moving up 5 places to # 7.

David Guetta debuts at # 5 with his new album ‘Nothing But The Beat‘, thus giving him his first Billboard Top 5 album. He previously charted at # 70 with his last album ‘One Love‘.

After their live performance on the VMA’s, Young The Giant, the only rock act to perform that night, sees their self titled début album soar from # 130 to # 42. Interestingly, the lead singer of the band, Sameer Gadhia, is of Indian origin. It’s good to see Asians being accepted in the mainstream music scene there, especially after Jay Sean topped the Billboard Charts last year with ‘Down‘.

The album’s in for the long haul. With ‘Someone Like You’ reaching # 1 as well, Adele’s domination seems to have reached new heights, especially since the album was selling even before ‘Rolling In The Deep’ and ‘Someone Like You’ hit # 1. Now that she’s conquering the singles chart, I predict the album sales to double, and there are high chances for ‘Set Fire To The Rain’ and ‘Turning Tables’ to make it to the Top 10,and maybe # 1.
