What happens when music maestro A R Rahman gets together with rock legends Mick Jagger and Dave Stewart, reggae icon Damian Marley, and soul songstress Joss Stone? The result is ‘SuperHeavy‘, the new super-group that’s all set to unleash a musical extravaganza of epic proportions with their self-titled début album to be released later this year. And their début single ‘Miracle Worker‘ has already garnered enough positive reviews for the world to sit up and take notice.
The video showcases the confluence of a variety of musical and cultural styles, from Indian classical dancers effortlessly blending in with Hip-Hop and Reggae performers, while the song itself is reggae based with a distinct touch of each singer’s trademark style. From Mick Jagger, dressed head to toe in a flamboyant pink outfit, unleashing his trademark swagger, to Joss Stone’s sultry soulful vocals, to A R Rahman blending in a few Indian elements as well..the video is a celebration of music as a whole.
Growing up in India, I’ve witnessed A R Rahman’s meteoric rise from a regional music director to Bollywood’s most prolific music composer, to an Academy Award winning global superstar. Watching this video, and being a fanatic of his work for decades, i couldn’t help but feel a stupendous sense of pride as Rahman got into the groove with Jagger and co.
And with Mick Jagger crooning in Sanskrit in the album’s second single ‘Satyameva Jayate‘, along with songs like the ‘Jai Ho‘ style upbeat ‘Energy‘, and ‘One Day One Night‘, a groundbreaking fusion of electronica, Indian and Jamaican beats, this is one album to watch out for in the coming months.
