Looks like the new age divas have the music industry on lock. As ‘Last Friday Night‘, the fifth single from Katy Perry’s Billboard # 1 album ‘Teenage Dream‘ ascends to # 1 on the Hot 100 Singles Chart, Katy Perry becomes the first woman and the only other artist apart from Michael Jackson to have 5 # 1 singles from one album. All 4 of her previous singles have reached # 1, including ‘California Girls‘ ( feat. Snoop Dogg), ‘Teenage Dream‘, ‘Firework‘ and ‘E.T.’ (feat Kanye West). Michael Jackson had accomplished the same feat in 1987-88 when 5 songs from ‘Bad’ went to # 1, namely ‘I Just Can’t Stop Loving You‘, ‘Bad‘, ‘Man In The Mirror‘, ‘The Way You make Me Feel‘ and ‘Dirty Diana‘. Among female artists, Katy was at a tie with Paula Abdul, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson and Whitney Houston who’ve all had 4 # 1 singles from one album. Janet Jackson additionally is the only artist in history to have 7 consecutive top 5 hits from a single album, when all 7 singles from her legendary album Rhythm Nation 1814 went to the top 5 of the Billboard Charts from 1988-91, and an additional 8th single ‘State Of The World‘ made it to the top 5 of the Airplay Chart, but could not be eligible for the Hot 100 as Billboard did not count airplay-only singles then. ‘Last Friday Night‘ gets an additional push to the top due to the release of the Missy Elliot remix. A tactic that seems to be very popular these days and have led to recent # 1’s by Rihanna and Katy Perry herself.
It’s ironic though that in spite of having 5 # 1 singles, the album ‘Teenage Dream‘ has sold 1.7 million units in the US after almost a year of its release. It points towards a growing trend that newer artists these days are mostly successful single artists, but album sales are a different story altogether. Rihanna just achieved her 10th # 1 single with ‘S’n’M‘ tying her with Stevie Wonder and Janet Jackson, but she has yet to achieve a # 1 album. By the time Mariah Carey had achieved her 4th # 1 from her self titled debut album in 1990, the album had already crossed a massive 7 million units in the US alone. Ditto with Whitney and Janet. Adele seems to be the only artist this year to have consistent sales of her album ‘21‘ (8 million units worldwide), making it the highest selling album of 2011.
